Asia to Africa - Part II

~  Part 2 - PHC, Nigeria - 1996 to 1999 ~

The next day we flew to Por Harcourt (PHC) using a Fokker.  I tell you my kids were hangging on to me and hugging to my side as they were afraid.  The aircarft was shaking as if in a turbulance and was flying into the clouds.  This type of plane does not fly above the clouds like the normal airplane.  I can't remember how long was the flight but it seemed to take so long probably due to the plane was shaking.

We safely landed in PHC and from there rode in a bus and went to the guest house to check in at the Residential Area.  Representative from the expats communities was there waiting for us (I forgot her name).  During tea time I think we met who looked like a china man but on  a later weeks that my husband said he is a malaysian muslim.  He came alone while his family was in Malaysia.

It was quiet as people were at work during the day we arrived. We had a driver allocated to us and my husband told him to bring us to town the next day.  I remember vividly it was a saturday.  I actually wanted to go see the sea and didn't realise that we were in the interior.  To the locals the river is the beach.  The driver brought us to the river.  I was frustrated.

We tried to check where the department store was, but there was none during our stay there.  They had a small supermarket for us to go shopping.  But things were very limited.  For the groceries, we got the nanny to buy in the market every thursday if I am not mistaken.  As for fish, prawn, squid, prawn, and meat, there was this seller who cycle to our house twice a month or monthly.

To be continued.......
